Concept Statement
Outrage, is a play about 3 historical figures, Bertolt Brecht, Socrates, and Domenico Scandella. As well as 1 fictional character, Steven, a college graduate student attending New England University in 1999 writing his thesis paper. All 4 of these characters despite oppression and silencing from authorities, aim to spread their ideas and change the world.
It feels fragmented, like the aftermath of an explosion.
Therefore…
The scenic design for Outrage, will create an environment that serves as both a visual statement to our audience, and a space for the actors to live in that compliments their character. The set will highlight the juxtaposition of having different time periods in the same play, as well as connect the different time periods. This will be accomplished by creating a set that is literal enough to ground us in each time period, while also able to melt and mold into another.
Conceptual Research
Much of my visual research was communicated via images and sketches. To the left is a board on conceptual images I gathered. Each collage represents a location needed in the play. This research helped me visualize all the locations needed in the play, what I believed each location should look like, and communicate my ideas to the director and the design team. I called it my Outrage “Murder Board”.
